That the past twenty or so months have been hard on everyone except billionaires, who got richer, is hardly news. I guess many of us didn’t know exactly how hard these months will be and perhaps only the best among us, pessimism experts, foresaw how long the hard part will last. What was news to me, was just how deep you could descend into the pit of pessimism.

The amount, gravity, and diversity of problems people around the world  have is staggering and not a little depressing. One of the things I am truly grateful for in life is that my problems tend to be of the insignificant variety most of the time. Which probably means I’m due some serious trouble soon but who knows. The universe may be napping and if this is the case may it nap until I die, thank you.

Isn’t it fun that while we’re panting with the heat up here in the northern hemisphere, children in the southern one just had their winter break? Oh, and did you know that Australian schools have four instead of two terms? Well, you probably do if you are Australian, but I didn’t until I googled it. Fascinating. This is what I call a strong start to the blog.

Children Know

A funny thing happened the other day. Little C had two friends over to play with in the garden while I did what I usually do in the afternoons, which is relax with a beer and, in this case, Psych. Suddenly, the boys came running into my field of vision waving the pair of evil clowns I keep on my desk. And you know what they were shouting? “Evil! Evil!”

The Story Repository

It started as a dream journal. I called it that but the goal I started it with was to collect story ideas – kernels – I could use when I was in the mood for a short story. Apparently, once you finish a novel every story idea that comes to mind is a novel idea, or at least this is the case for me. Now, dreams on the other hand, dreams are short story material, I’ve no idea why. What I know is that most of the short stories I’ve written started their lives as something in a dream. It made sense to collect these story kernels.

My daughter started taking ice-skating lessons three years ago, when she was four and passionately wanted to become a hockey player (because of Inside Out).
